Move for a Cause: Join the 100 Miles in May Challenge

Spring in Alaska means longer days, melting trails, and a renewed energy to get outside and get moving. It’s the perfect time to join the 100 Miles in May challenge — a month-long wellness movement that invites Alaskans to celebrate physical activity in all forms while supporting healthier futures for our youth.

What Is 100 Miles in May?

Organized by Healthy Futures of Alaska, 100 Miles in May is a fun, friendly challenge to encourage people of all ages and abilities to stay active throughout the month of May. The goal is simple: log 100 miles of movement over the course of the month. You can track actual mileage or convert minutes of activity into miles using a handy conversion chart — making it inclusive no matter your pace, space, or ability.

It’s not a race. It’s a celebration of movement, health, and community connection.

How You Move Is Up to You

One of the best parts of the challenge is that it recognizes movement in all forms. You don’t have to be an ultra-runner or cyclist to participate. In fact, many people discover just how much they move throughout the day once they start tracking.

Here are some of the ways you can log your miles:

🥾 Everyday Movement

  • Walking the dog

  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator

  • Walking your kids to school

  • Strolling with a friend during lunch break

🚴‍♂️ Active Transportation

  • Biking to work or errands

  • Skateboarding or rollerblading

  • Walking to your local coffee shop

🌿 Outdoor Fun

  • Hiking or trail running

  • Gardening or yard work

  • Paddling, canoeing, or kayaking

  • Spring skiing or snowmachining (yep, it still counts in parts of Alaska!)

🧘 Indoor & Low-Impact Movement

  • Yoga, pilates, or stretching

  • Physical therapy routines

  • House cleaning or dancing in your living room

Every 30 minutes of movement can be logged as 1 mile using the Healthy Futures time-to-mile conversion, so even those who can’t track distance can still join in meaningfully.

Why It Matters

Movement is essential for our physical and mental well-being. It improves heart health, strengthens muscles and bones, reduces stress, and boosts mood. For communities in Alaska—where isolation, long winters, and limited recreational access can pose barriers—creating simple, supportive ways to move more makes a big difference.

Participating in 100 Miles in May isn’t just about individual wellness—it’s a chance to model healthy habits for our families, cheer each other on, and get reconnected after a long winter.

Your Movement Supports Alaska Youth

While participation is free, many individuals and teams choose to donate or fundraise during the challenge. Donations go directly to support Healthy Futures, an Alaska-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing physical activity in children and youth.

With funds raised, Healthy Futures provides:

  • Free physical activity logbooks for schools across Alaska

  • Support for after-school programs and community activity events

  • Tools and inspiration to help kids get 60 minutes of movement daily

Your steps, spins, paddles, and stretches help build a culture of wellness for the next generation of Alaskans.
