Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is the hormone that allows glucose (sugar) to enter the body’s cells to be used for energy. Without enough insulin, blood sugar levels rise and the body cannot properly fuel itself.
