Building a Stronger Future for Rural Healthcare

At Sunshine Community Health Center, we are focused on making sure our communities have access to high-quality, reliable care, both today and into the future. As part of our recent strategic planning, we are prioritizing a few key areas that will help us do just that.

These priorities are centered around expanding services, strengthening systems of care, and ensuring long-term sustainability for the communities we serve.

Expanding Opportunities Through Rural Health Transformation

First, we have applied for funding through Alaska’s Rural Health Transformation Program. These funds would help us expand behavioral health services, improve care coordination, strengthen our workforce, and invest in facilities and infrastructure. All of our initial applications have been submitted, and we are now waiting to hear if we can move forward to the next step. This is an important opportunity to bring additional resources into our communities.

Exploring Mobile Integrated Health

We are also exploring a Mobile Integrated Health program. This would be a targeted service designed for a small number of patients with more complex health needs who may benefit from additional support outside of the clinic. It will not replace regular clinic visits or emergency services, and participation will be limited and based on specific clinical criteria.

Our focus is on carefully building a model that improves care for those who need it most, while making sure it is sustainable for our communities.

Advancing Value-Based Care in Alaska

Finally, we are continuing to move toward value-based care through our participation in ACO Resolute. This is an independent nonprofit organization, organized through the Alaska Primary Care Association, that brings together community health centers across the state to work collaboratively on improving care quality and managing costs. It is only the second Accountable Care Organization in Alaska and currently the only one made up entirely of community health centers.

As a member, SCHC is working alongside peer organizations to better coordinate care, use data more effectively, and ensure patients receive the right care at the right time. This is a long-term effort that helps strengthen the sustainability of healthcare in rural Alaska.

Looking Ahead

Together, these efforts are about strengthening access to care, improving health outcomes, and building a system that works for rural Alaska, now and for years to come.
